		<description>Jeff,
This lack of enthusiasm and results has been going on for far too long in language classes in the US. I&#039;m not sure that more recent data would show substantial changes, except in classrooms like Elaine&#039;s.
Have you spoken with Stephen Krashen about his recent involvement in and support of TPRS language study?

		<description>Jeff,
I love your blog! I taught high school Spanish for 25 years and I agree that poor teaching methodology is one problem for successful FL learners. Another problem lies in our society which continues to be monolingual in spite of the heavy influence of Hispanics in the US. I agree that student motivation is another issue but using methods that engage and ignite students is available but rejected by more traditional teaching methods. I began using TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) thanks to the creator, Blaine Ray, in my last 10 years of teaching. I saw incredible acquisition of language and enthusiasm of my students.

		<description>Jeff,

Many thanks for this wonderfully comprehensive report on an important area of concern for language learners / teachers.

A lot of the attrition really lies in the realm of motivation IMHO. Some students did mention content as a reason and I think that without a teacher/classmates - the content itself must be highly motivating for a language learner or else they&#039;ll drop out. That&#039;s why youtube and authentic video is becoming more and more a part of all language courses. Online courses will only cut into student drop out rates if they adopt highly motivating, personal video content.
